Offerings to Mountain Spirits

[bod kyi mdos glud la dpyad pa'I gtam skya reng gsar pa]
This book is a study based on Khalong Dochen, the earliest available text on the subject, considered to be a standard work and probably the best source for researching the Tibetan tradition of offering to mountain spirits. It discusses the origins, procedures, lineage, development and protective deity of this offering practice. The study is structured into three main sections. The first section is mainly explanatory in nature, offering a detailed description of the practice and its individual components. This includes the origin, procedures and results of making offerings to mountain spirits. The second section is an analysis centered around five central aspects which enable a more in-depth understanding of Khalong Dochen. These are: (1) How and when did the evolution of Khalong take place? (2) The profound teachings that underlie the practice of offering to mountain spirits. (3) Information on the emergence, nature and benefits of Sidpe Chokrab and on the characteristics of Ngarglud. (4) An independent discussion on the origin and nature of the most essential part of the practice, which involves Sipe Gyalmo. (5) A summary of findings. The third and final section is a comparative study on the artistic characteristics of Khalong Dochen and the Dunhuang documents, respectively. The book has not yet been published.
